Colin bags £100 prize for green idea!

Congratulations to RAF High Wycombe’s Colin Nicholson, whose Sustainability Incentivisation Scheme idea has won him £100 Marks and Spencer vouchers! Colin suggested that time clocks could be fitted to water boilers in kitchens to reduce energy costs, maintenances and minimise energy consumption.

Water boilers used to make hot drinks constantly boil water. They heat up 24/7, even when the kitchens are not in use, therefore wasting energy. They are also prone to breaking down after a short period, which could be down to high usage. The boilers cost in the region of £1000 to replace and the parts are also pricey.

Colin’s idea of fitting timers means the boilers could be set to come on at 7am and go off again at 5pm, Monday to Friday. This would mean each boiler would be turned off for an amazing 255 days per year – saving a huge amount of energy!

 

 

 

 

The clocks are simple to fit and cost around £30 each. The end result is not only saving energy, but the maintenance costs can also be reduced. A great sustainable solution Colin – well done!

It was decided that a secondary prize of £50 should be given to Angus Pyke at St Vincent’s. Angus submitted two great ideas to reduce cost and energy at the site, one of which is currently being tested.
