October 2009
One of the Army’s most senior officers, Commander Regional Forces, Lt General Mark Mans, gave his seal of approval to the £1.82m upgrading of single soldiers’ living accommodation at Dalton Barracks in Abingdon.
Under the Personnel First initiative the barracks poorest grade accommodation blocks have been given a major internal facelift, designed to improve the lives of its occupants for the next four years whilst they await delivery of the SLA programme at the site.
PriDE’s MNW team set about the work in May in order to complete the work for soldiers return in October 2009. It was a big task, as the building had not been touched since 1993 and was in very bad condition. Work included complete rewiring, refurbishment of all wet areas, redecoration and flooring, and all new furniture. Energy efficient lighting with PIR detection was also fitted in all communal areas, bringing a sustainable element to the project. The work has been completed to a very high standard and the customer is delighted with the new rooms.
Abingdon Station Commander, Col David Kelly explained.
‘People on came are feeling better about themselves as a result of these improvements. It really is sending out a positive message for our troops’.
The work cost in the region of £5k per bed space, and 206 rooms were fully refurbished in this project, accommodating this number of soldiers; the work includes Sergeant’s and Warrant Officers Messes.
Additional funding to the value of £600K has now been injected, enabling a further 107 rooms to be refurbished, bringing them up to this standard. The MNW team are now all hard at work as all rooms had to be completed by the end of the financial year, March 2010.
